Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is working on a bill that would amend the Internal Revenue Code to permit business travelers to deduct the travel expenses of an accompanying spouse. Deducting these travel expenses used to be permitted, and Graham want to restore that deduction.
The Travel Industry Association of America supports Graham's proposal, and the Southeast Tourism Policy Council wants STS members to be aware of the topic as it comes up for discussion.
Supporters see the deduction as a way to stimulate business travel and benefit the entire travel and tourism sector. They believe deductability of spousal expenses would lead to extension of business trips and create extra leisure travel expenditures.
